Iron Maiden have unveiled the first song from their upcoming double album, The Book of Souls. You can see the video for "Speed of Light" above.

The animated video doesn't include any Iron Maiden members, but the band's longtime mascot, Eddie, is there, taking on opponents in various video-game landscapes (there's a scrolling fighting game, a first-person shooter and an old-school Donkey Kong-style adventure). All the while, "Speed of Light" (complete with cowbell!) provides the soundtrack.

The band teased a small portion of its new music a few weeks ago with a 30-second clip, but "Speed of Light" marks the first new Iron Maiden song in five years, and the first since singer Bruce Dickinson underwent cancer treatments earlier this year.

The Book of Souls is due on Sept. 4, and according to the band, it's got something for everybody, including an 18-minute epic called "Empire of the Clouds" that will most likely be the centerpiece of the double album.

The last time Iron Maiden released an album, in 2010, The Final Frontier became one of the band's biggest successes, debuting at No. 4 in the U.S., their best showing ever. It also reached No. 1 across the globe. So anticipation for The Book of Souls is high.

And while there hasn't been an official announcement yet, bassist and Maiden founder Steve Harris said the group will be hitting the road in support of the album. “We can’t wait to come out and play new songs on tour,” he told Classic Rock magazine last month.
