UPDATE: Iowa Police Officer in Serious but Stable Condition
UPDATE 7/31 - KCCI reports that a Des Moines police officer was shot by friendly fire, and a suspect was killed during a domestic dispute investigation. The injured officer was struck in the back of his shoulder in a gap of his protective body armor. KCCI reports that the bullet exited through his chest. The officer is listed in serious but stable condition.
ORIGINAL STORY - A police officer in Des Moines was shot early Tuesday morning and a suspect was killed during a domestic dispute investigation, according to the Des Moines Register.
In a news release, Des Moines police officials say that officers were called to the 5800 block of Southeast 35th Circle for a report of a person violating a protective order. The Register reports that police spotted the suspect's vehicle and attempted to stop it at around 3:50 a.m. Tuesday. The suspect then fled from police.
Moments later the suspect fled westbound on East Army Post Road, left the roadway, and came to a stop, according to the Register. Officers reported that shots were fired and that a Des Moines police officer was down. Police officials identify the officer as a 37-year-old with four years of service on the force. He was transported to a local hospital. He is listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest.
The Register reports that the suspect was shot by officers and died at the scene. An investigation into the shooting continues.
