A Car Crashed Into a Cedar Rapids Cafe on Wednesday
A small donut shop near Kirkwood Community College has a pretty big mess to clean up! According to an article from KCRG, a car accidentally crashed right through the front of Munchi Mochi on Wednesday, July 30th.
What Happened?
The staff and customers at Munchi Mochi got the surprise of a lifetime on Wednesday afternoon when a vehicle unexpectedly came crashing through their storefront. In an interview with KCRG, the shop owner Kira Anthony said that she was at home at the time of the accident, when she got a call from an employee telling her what happened. Kira was obviously surprised to hear the news, and she told KCRG, “I thought he was joking at first.” The aftermath of the accident was posted to Munchi Mochi's Instagram story, which you can see HERE.
Munchi Mochi posted an official statement on social media with more information about the accident, including details on the people who were involved. Two staff members and one customer were inside the store at the time, but, luckily, nobody was seriously injured.
We don't know the events that lead up to the crash, but Munchi Mochi says that it was definitely unintentional. The statement reads:
"We cannot comment on the cause of the accident, as we are only able to speak from our own perspective. What we can say is that it was truly an accident. The individual involved — who has been a loyal supporter of our business — and their passengers are understandably still in shock, as are those who were present inside. We ask our community to extend grace and compassion during this time."
After the accident occurred, Munchi Mochi still needed to sell their donuts, so they set up a stand outside. Lots of people showed up to help support the small business, and KCRG reports that, "less than two hours after the crash, Munchi Mochi had sold dozens of boxes of donuts and nearly run out of stock."
Munchi Mochi went on to thank customers for all of the love and support, as well as the Cedar Rapids Police Department and Fire Department for their quick response. They also mentioned that Madsen Homes came out after-hours to help board up the storefront, and that their staff, even the ones who weren't scheduled to work that day, came out to help with clean up. When Will They Reopen?
Owner Kira Anthony told KCRG that said she hopes to reopen the shop very quickly, hopefully by Friday, August 1st. For the latest updates on the situation at Munchi Mochi, you can check out the business' Instagram HERE.
