Hello Kitty is one of those instantly recognizable cultural staples that's been around since time immemorial. A Japanese cartoon created all the way back in 1974, she has endured numerous global cultural changes to remain relevant to this day. According to The New York Times, by 2010, Hello Kitty was worth about $5 billion/year, with her likeness on shirts, hats, mugs, and too many trinkets to name.

Iowans will have a chance to get both a taste of Hello Kitty beverages and a chance at some exclusive merch when the Hello Kitty Café Truck rolls through the state in May. This pastel-pink truck travels the country putting smiles on people's faces. It doesn't matter if you're nine or 90. Everyone flocks to the Hello Kitty Truck.

The Des Moines Register reported this week that the Hello Kitty Café Truck will be stationed at the Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines, IA on May 24th, 2025 from 10am - 7pm. It will be parked in front of the Century Theaters on the southeast side of the mall.

What's the occasion? Hello Kitty (whose real name is Kitty White, keep that in your back-pocket for trivia night) turns 50 this year, if you can believe it. Sanrio, the company that created Hello Kitty, is celebrating her birthday all across America, giving fans a chance to grab some exclusive merch and some unique beverages.

For Hello Kitty collectors, this is a can't-miss event. The truck houses an assortment of limited-edition items for sale, including:

  • T-shirts
  • Pins
  • Decorated sugar cookies
  • Macarons
  • Badges
  • Pins
  • Key chains
  • Tote bags
  • Mugs

The assortment of items are decorated with the likeness of Hello Kitty and her many friends. But that's not all. In years past, there's also a food/drink menu, complete with items like passionfruit iced tea, various lattes, and apple pie, tarts, sugar cookies, and macarons in the sweets department.

Hello Kitty's 50th birthday is not the only thing Sanrio is celebrating this year. They're also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the truck itself, which hit the road back in October 2014.
