A 12 year record has just been broken on the first day of the 2024 Iowa State Fair! This is literally the biggest pig you will find in the state of Iowa.
Iowa is known for producing a boat load of corn and everyone from Iowa knows we have more hogs than people. I wonder if this guy counts as 2 or even 3 hogs when they tally up Iowa pigs every year.
According to National Geographic, fully grown pigs generally weigh somewhere between 300-700 pounds. That's a fairly wide range but even a 700 pound pig would have nothing on Finnegan.
Large size pigs would still weigh less than half of what Finnegan weighs.
Meet Finnegan, The New Record Holder
Finnegan is from Monticello and is the new winner of the fair's Big Boar contest. According to KCCI, Finnegan weighed in at 1,420 pounds, which is 85 pounds more than the record set in 2012!
Bryan Britt is a pork producer and this isn't his first time leaving the state fair with the biggest pig. He's also taken home the crown in 2019 and 2021. In his hometown he's known as "the big boar guy."
He spoke to KCCI about Finnegan and the obvious question is...how does a pig get that big? You might think Finnegan is an over-eater or he sits and eats all day, and according to Bryan, he believes Finnegan has a big skeleton and he's more picky when it comes to food than most people would believe.
"I've raised this guy since birth. I couldn't believe it that he was that much heavier. I picked him out at birth, thinking he had a big skeleton. You've gotta feed them right to get them to this size. It doesn't happen overnight. He's really finicky. ... He likes his special feed. We make it sweet. It's all natural."
Bryan does have a few "key ingredients" but he's keeping that secret to himself. Smart man if he wants to keep producing Iowa's biggest pigs!
