No Mask Mandate (For Now) for Dubuque Iowa Schools
There will be no mask mandate for Dubuque Community students for now, but that doesn't mean there won't be in the future.
At Monday night's school board meeting, Dubuque Community School Board members voted unanimously to wait on any action to require a mask mandate for Dubuque schools. They did decide to re-visit the matter at their October meeting.
There were dozens of parents, students and other community members in attendance last night. Some argued for a mask mandate, others arguing against it.
The subject of a possible mask mandate has been a popular subject since a federal judge last week temporarily ordered the state to stop enforcing the law banning school boards from requiring masks, ruling that the law increases the risk children with health conditions have of getting COVID-19. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has vowed to appeal the decision and has asked the temporary order be allowed to expire.
The district's COVID-19 dashboard reported 17 active, positive cases among students and five among staff.
