Prophets of Rage Release Newly Recorded Version of ‘Prophets of Rage’
Prophets of Rage, the rap-rock hybrid uniting members of Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill, have reportedly been in the studio recording. The band has released a new rendition of the Public Enemy classic, "Prophets of Rage," mixing in new moments with pieces of the original track.
Opening with a crescendo buildup, the band unleashes a groove before Chuck D. takes over the microphone, keeping his lyrics true to the first verse of the original Public Enemy recording. The chorus is given a makeover, bringing in more traditional song structure and group vocals.
Cypress Hill's B-Real takes charge on the second verse, employing his own lyrics, but it isn't long before Chuck D. gets back behind the mike and sticks to more of his original lyrics. The song is a wondrous amalgamation of Public Enemy's beat-driven style and Rage Against the Machine's unique sense of rhythm through Tom Morello's inimitable guitar playing.
Prophets of Rage performed a free show from a rooftop in the Skid Row district of Los Angeles on Friday (July 15). The band opened with "Prophets of Rage," performing a mix of originals from Public Enemy, Rage Against the Machine and Cypress Hill along with a new original song, "The Party's Over."
The band will kick off the "Make America Rage Again" tour with AWOLNATION on Aug. 19, running through Oct. 16. Ahead of the tour, Prophets of Rage have one scheduled show on July 19 in Cleveland, Ohio, which will coincide with the Republican National Convention being held slightly over two miles away. The band's website also stated that the "Prophets of Rage" single was released "mere hours before their guerrilla performance during the Republican National Convention," suggesting another show could be in store.
