Hours before his shocking death, Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell delivered his final show with the band — and closed out the set with a performance that, in retrospect, feels like an awful bit of foreshadowing.

Soundgarden's 19-song set list at the Fox Theatre in Detroit last night closed out with "Slaves & Bulldozers," a cut from 1991's Badmotorfinger that includes the refrain “So bleed your heart out / There’s no more rides for free / Bleed your heart out / I said, ‘What’s in it for me? / What’s in it for me?'” Underscoring those lyrics was the performance's interpolation of Led Zeppelin's "In My Time of Dying" — a segue they'd used before, but proved a particularly poignant way to close out this show.

As previously reported, Cornell died shortly after the sold-out show, with a spokesperson describing his death as "sudden and unexpected." Although a cause of death has yet to be determined, early reports indicate that police are treating it as a possible suicide and are investigating accordingly. While it'll be some time until the outside world knows what really happened — if ever — it'll be difficult for fans to see that final song choice as anything less than sad and/or eerie. Watch Cornell's last song above, and check out fan-shot footage from the rest of the show below, along with the concert's complete set list.
