Dubuque Momentum Reshapes the Community to the Tune of $1 Billion
Since I first started my radio career in Dubuque in 2010, I have seen massive changes and enhancements come to the city of Dubuque. A town built on culture, the arts, entertainment, and knowledge. Our city hosts the amazing National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, offers loads of delectable culinary treats and drinks, and excels as an equally beautiful section of the driftless region. Now it seems the city itself is making some serious waves into the future.

Lately, you can feel the momentum everywhere. Drive around town and it seems like something new is going up on nearly every corner; fresh apartment buildings, updated schools, expanded business spaces, and even improvements to the places many of us gather and enjoy. It's a sort of "steady progress" that doesn’t shout for attention but builds on itself each year. Suddenly, it's been 15 years just for me, and I realize how much Dubuque has grown.
“We have a more diversified economy today than we’ve had at any point in the last 40 years. That diversity—combined with a highly educated and adaptable workforce—continues to drive investment and growth. Our concentration of higher education institutions is a major force multiplier, strengthening our talent pipeline and giving employers confidence in our market. Reaching the $1 billion milestone is the result of years of collaboration. From permitting improvements to business support and site development, our partners are committed to strengthening the economic foundation in the Greater Dubuque region and ensuring we remain a place where employers and residents can thrive.”
-Rick Dickinson, Greater Dubuque Development Corporation President & CEO
What I think is really important is how this growth shows the confidence people have in our community of Dubuque. Developers are building big. Institutions are upgrading. Local businesses are expanding due to the idea that our region isn’t just holding its own, but it’s moving forward. According to a recent press release from Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, the county has crossed over a billion dollars in construction investment in just a few short years. That number feels almost unreal for a community our size, but when you look around, it's quite apparent.
The growth isn't just about dollars, though. It’s about what it means to live in Dubuque County. More housing means more options for families. Continued improvement of schools set up future generations for success. New commercial projects create jobs and keep young people from feeling like they have to leave to find better opportunities. Even longtime residents are enjoying the latest additions and getting involved on how they can be better served.
As we head toward 2026, the pace doesn’t seem to be slowing, and that's a good thing. Dubuque is truly a community mixed with hard-working, creative, local-minded people. That spirit is being seen more and more in our area businesses and neighborhoods. The future isn’t something we’re waiting on. Rather, it's something Dubuque is actively building, one project at a time.
