The Dubuque Community School District’s esports program is off to a strong start, and it’s only getting better. In partnership with the Dubuque Esports League (DEL), students from Hempstead and Senior High have joined forces to compete in games like Overwatch 2, Rocket League, Valorant, and more. They've formed a united and rapidly growing esports presence in our region of the state.

This past winter, the district’s Overwatch 2 team earned a spot in the Iowa High School Esports Association playoffs in Marshalltown. Seeded 12th, the team defied expectations by finishing in 5th place. That's an impressive achievement for any first-year program. Players and coaches credit teamwork, determination, and a supportive coaching staff for the season’s success.

Additionally, DEL provides far more than just a competitive outlet. The facility on Dodge Street hosts regular practices, leagues, and age-based clubs that promote skill development in communication, strategy, technical troubleshooting, and hand-eye coordination. Players also learn to balance gaming with school and personal commitments. This is an essential aspect of growing life skills along the way.

Looking ahead, the excitement continues. DEL is offering summer camps for students in grades 4 to 7, themed around Fortnite, Minecraft, and Madden. Camps run weekly throughout June, July, and August, with both half- and full-day options available.

The Esports team is currently competing in Valorant and Mario Kart for the spring season. This fall, the high school league will return for a new season with competitions in Super Smash Bros. and Rainbow Six Siege. Students interested in joining should check with their schools for tryout details. Practices and matches are held during the week, offering a structured and engaging extracurricular experience. As a gamer myself, I find great value in the camaraderie and friendships that these after-school activities can provide.

With a successful first season under their belt and even more opportunities on the horizon, the Dubuque esports team is poised to grow even stronger. Our local kids are putting Dubuque on the competitive gaming map, and they're taking the community with them!
