Dubuque Hidden Gem Offers Hiking and Biking
If you’re looking for a peaceful escape into nature right here in Dubuque, the Interstate Power Company (IPC) Forest Preserve is a hidden gem worth checking out. Tucked away on a scenic 78-acre parcel of land, the preserve offers a little something for everyone, whether you’re up for a hike or a bike ride. Even better, the area's isolation lends to some great wildlife watching.
This past weekend, my family and I laced up our hiking boots and explored one main hiking trail at IPC. We clocked in 1.4 miles over 40 minutes.
Not a bad pace, considering how often we stopped to marvel at what we saw. And let me tell you, there’s plenty to see. About halfway through our walk, we stumbled upon a herd of deer, at least ten of them, quietly grazing in the distance.
Several doe and young fawns stared at us for a few minutes before going about their early spring grazing. It was one of those “wow” moments that reminds you why places like this are so special. Chipmunks and squirrels were also abundant and fun to watch scurry through the leaf litter.
The preserve is a mix of restored prairie, grassland, and deep-wooded ravines. It also offers up a few streams that wind through the bike trails. It’s a peaceful and quiet spot, and the trails are well-kept, winding through the gently rolling hills and denser forested areas.
For mountain bikers, IPC Forest Preserve is a must-visit. It doesn’t have quite as many trails as Dubuque’s Proving Grounds, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in fun and challenge.
The rugged terrain, wooded area, and elevation changes mean you’ll get some solid climbs and exhilarating descents, perfect for anyone who likes a bit of adventure on two wheels.
Of course, you'll be able to hear the hum of one of our local Dubuque County electric facilities in the prairie area. That section is an area where Eagle Scouts are volunteering their hours. It looked like several new trees had been planted in that section along the trail.
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely family hike or an adrenaline-pumping bike ride, the IPC Forest Preserve is a fantastic place to connect with nature. Bring your camera, your sense of adventure, and maybe even a picnic.
A hike won't take you long, but you could spend a day riding the trails on your bike or exploring the nature that surrounds you. It’s one of Dubuque’s best-kept secrets, and it’s waiting to be explored by you.
