Shelters across the United States are experiencing a crisis due to overcrowding, along with many other obstacles. The BISSELL Pet Foundation has responded with a national call for adoption with "Empty the Shelters."

The event will take place at more than 275 shelters across 45 states from May 2nd through 8th. "Empty the Shelters" also includes Dubuque Regional Humane Society.

"Shelters across the country are over capacity, and highly adoptable pets are at risk as we face one of the largest crises in recent years," said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, in a press release. "BISSELL Pet Foundation is calling on people to visit their community shelters during 'Empty the Shelters' to save a life through adoption. Without you, there is no tomorrow for these deserving pets."

During the first week in May, BISSELL Pet Foundation will sponsor reduced adoption fees for $25 or less. Potential adopters are encouraged to find the nearest participating shelter (which can be done via the interactive map on their website) and confirm their adoption.

Every location is likely to have a BISSELL spokesperson/representative available to provide further details.

More than 23 million American households (nearly one in five) adopted a pet during the pandemic. It came during a time people were seeking companionship when social isolation was very real. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) researched and found that the overwhelming majority of dogs and cats acquired during the height of the pandemic are still in their homes today. It's great news for the adoption industry.

I took in two cats at the onset of the pandemic. It's honestly been one of the best decisions I've made in my young life.

"Empty the Shelters" has helped 83,055 pets find homes across the country and Canada since it began in 2016. Consider stopping by your local shelter and taking home a four-legged friend, if you are willing and able.

BISSELL Pet Foundation was founded in 2011. You can find out more information here.
