The Iowa DOT reports that a fatality is considered "crash-related" when death occurs within 30 days (720 hours) of a crash. Because fatal crashes involve complex investigations, this can delay the official fatalities report. Therefore, the numbers for the most recent months are preliminary and can change considerably.

As of June 28, 2022, there have been 145 fatalities this year. This result outpaces last year by three fatalities or 2.11%. However, June has decreased significantly from one year ago, with 18 deaths this month compared to 33 in 2021.

There were 356 total traffic-related fatalities in 2021, which marks a five-year high. One hundred seventy-six deaths were due to speeding or aggressive driving, 89 from impaired driving, 27 from distracted driving, and three from drowsing driving.
