As fall approaches and leaves begin to pile up, the City of Dubuque's Public Works Department is offering residents multiple ways to manage their yard debris. In addition to environmentally friendly practices like mulching, mowing, and backyard composting, the City has outlined specific disposal options, including scheduled leaf rake-out collections and regular yard waste collection services.

Dubuque Leaf Rake-Out Collections

Starting on Monday, October 14th, and running through Wednesday, November 27th, the City of Dubuque will provide leaf rake-out collection services. To take advantage of this service, residents must schedule their collection in advance by either visiting www.cityofdubuque.org/yardwaste or calling 563-589-4250. It's important to make an appointment before raking leaves into collection piles.

What You Need to Know:

  • Only loose leaves, pine needles, and pinecones are accepted. Grass, brush, plants, and rocks are not.
  • Leaf piles should be placed at the curb no earlier than the day before the scheduled collection.
  • Ensure vehicles are parked at least 10 feet away from the pile, and keep it clear of fire hydrants, utility boxes, storm sewer basins, and other obstructions.
  • Cost: A minimum fee of $20 will be charged for every 40-bag equivalent of leaves collected. This fee will be added to the resident's utility bill.

For those looking to use the City's regular yard waste collection service, leaves and other yard debris can be placed in a variety of containers, provided they meet specific requirements:

  • Paper yard waste bags with a single-use City of Dubuque yard waste sticker.
  • Rigid solid waste containers displaying a 2024 annual yard waste decal or a single-use yard waste sticker.
  • City-issued yard debris tipper carts.
  • Please Note: Bags, containers, and bundles must not exceed 35 gallons or weigh more than 40 pounds. Yard waste placed in plastic bags will not be collected.

Residents can purchase single-use yard waste stickers in sheets of five for $7.50 at most local grocery, hardware, and discount stores. Brush ties, which cost $1.50 each, are also available at area retailers.

As a reminder, burning leaves and raking or blowing leaves into the street is prohibited and could result in fines. The city encourages residents to follow the proper disposal guidelines to avoid penalties and help keep Dubuque clean.
