The City of Dubuque Leisure Services Department has announced the reopening of Miller Riverview Park and Campground on Monday, September 9th. The popular 20-acre park, located on the Mississippi River, has been closed since late May due to high river levels and subsequent flooding.

The closure, initially implemented to ensure public safety, has had a significant impact on both campers and pedestrians. The Mississippi River's elevated levels submerged the entire western side of the campground and covered parts of Riverview Park Road, restricting access to the northern portion of the campground. Additional rises in river levels delayed the reopening even further.

During the extended closure, the City’s Leisure Services Department focused on extensive cleanup efforts. The park staff faced major challenges, including addressing significant electrical issues caused by storm damage, along with debris removal and other flood-related damages.

"Our process this year was impacted and extended due to significant wind and rain events on top of the high river levels. We appreciate the patience of the public while we have worked to get the park open."

-Stephen Fehsal, City of Dubuque Park Division Manager

Despite the challenges, the park is now ready to welcome visitors again. However, campers are advised that current campground conditions may be dusty due to bare soil areas from flooding damage. The park will remain open until the fourth Sunday in October (October 27th), weather permitting.

Campers who made reservations before the closure on May 26th have been proactively refunded, and the online camping reservation system is now back online for new bookings. The Leisure Services Department encourages those interested to make their reservations as soon as possible, given the park’s popularity.

For additional information or to make reservations, visit the website or contact the Leisure Services Department at 563-589-4263. The department’s office hours are from 9 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday.

For many local families the reopening of Miller Riverview Park and Campground is a welcome sign of recovery after the summer’s severe weather and flooding, finally offering a cherished spot for recreation along the Mississippi River once again.
