America's heartland has abundant culture, and I don't just mean agriculture.

While the venues may not be as iconic as larger cities, Dubuque's performance spaces, such as the Grand Opera House and Five Flags theater, are pretty extraordinary for their size.

For instance, constructed in 1910, the Five Flags theater was designed by George L. Rapp, who would become one of the nation's premier theater & movie palace architects with works including the Chicago Theater and New York City's Paramount Building in Times Square. In addition, the Grand's architect oversaw the design and building of the U.S. Treasury Department H.Q. in Washington, DC.

But I digress to make the point that there are more than a few unique and well-regarded venues in the Tri-States to enjoy high-quality theater and music productions. Including the remarkable Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens (visit website).

Started, built, and maintained by an all-volunteer crew since 1980, the 56-acre park is one of Dubuque's crown jewel public spaces featuring 60 different types of gardens, pathways, sculptures, and water features.

So bring a chair or blanket, food, beverages, and friends, and you're set for a fabulous Sunday evening outdoor summer concert.
