Fall Adventures at One of My Favorite Dubuque Places: The National Mississippi River Museum
If you're like me, then you probably need to shake off that school-week grind and dive into something fun, but still enriching. Whether you're looking for a family-friendly outing or just a solo escape, the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium in Dubuque is a go-to destination. Trust me, it's one of my favorite places to explore, where you can break away from the textbooks but still stay active and keep learning.
Here are some of the fantastic upcoming events that'll get you out of the house and into something exciting:
Sept. 18 – Museum X: William M. Black – Behind the Scenes Tour
5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Here’s your chance to explore the historic William M. Black, one of the coolest vessels docked at the museum. On this exclusive behind-the-scenes tour, you’ll dive deep into its rich maritime history. It’s like stepping back in time, learning in a hands-on way that's miles better than any textbook. (Plus, they’ll have light refreshments!)
Oct. 2 – Early Explorers: I is for Ice
10 AM – 11 AM
Got little ones? Early Explorers is a monthly program packed with interactive activities for children ages 2-5. Your little explorers will get hands-on with crafts and games – a perfect way to engage their curiosity and energy while you sip your coffee. Admission is easy on the wallet, too!
Oct. 9 – Homeschool Days: Mathias Ham Historic Site
11 AM – 4 PM
This one is a little off-site at the Mathias Ham Historic Site (2241 Lincoln Ave), but trust me, it's worth the trip! If you’re a homeschooler – or just a weekend history buff – you can explore Dubuque's past through hands-on activities like lead mining, playing old-time games, and doing chores the way Dubuque residents did back in the day.
Oct. 11 – School’s Out Day Camps: Flex Your Mussels
9 AM – 4 PM
When the school bell rings for a break, keep the kids learning with a day camp at the museum. With activities focused on local wildlife, including mussels, this full-day camp is perfect for K-5 students who need something engaging (and fun!) to do while school’s out. Be sure to pack a lunch and water bottle. Scholarships are available if you need assistance!
Oct. 15 – Museum X: Prairie Talk & Greenhouse Fun
6 PM – 8 PM
Join Codi Sharkey, Conservation Program Manager, for a night dedicated to exploring the history and importance of Iowa prairies. Plus, you’ll even get a hands-on project in the greenhouse, creating your own mini-greenhouse to take home. It’s the kind of event that makes you feel like you’re giving back to nature, while still enjoying a relaxing evening.
Oct. 18 & 19 – Haunting on Lincoln Ave (Evening Tours)
5:30 PM & 7 PM
For those who love a good thrill, the Mathias Ham Historic Site is hosting an eerie, spooky tour with ghost stories and fiendish fun. The historic house will be shrouded in darkness, lit only by candlelight, with spooky stories told by costumed interpreters. You won’t want to miss the “witch’s brew” in the kitchen at the end. *Limited to 15 people per session, so book early!
Oct. 19 – Haunting on Lincoln Ave (Afternoon)
11 AM – 4 PM
If you’re looking for a family-friendly version of Haunting on Lincoln Ave, bring the kids during the afternoon! This Victorian-style Halloween celebration includes mask-making, harvest games, and more. It’s all about celebrating Halloween in a way that’s educational but also super fun for kids.
Oct. 27 – Mad Scientist Party
9 AM – 4 PM
Everyone loves Halloween, and the Mad Scientist Party at the River Museum is the perfect way to celebrate. Come in costume, trick-or-treat through the museum, and enjoy games, science experiments, and live music from the Americana Band. Pro tip: Bring your own reusable bag for all the treats!
Oct. 31 – School’s Out Day Camps: The Boney Bunch
9 AM – 4 PM
Another School’s Out Camp to keep the kids busy on Halloween! With a spooky theme, this day camp is all about celebrating the holiday while keeping kids engaged with hands-on activities. Don’t forget to bring lunch and water. Scholarships are available for families in need.
No matter what you're into, there’s always something going on at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium to spark your curiosity and make the weekend a little more exciting. Whether it's learning about prairies, taking a spooky-fun and informational tour, or just spending quality time with family, the museum has events that will keep you active, learning, and having a blast.
