A devastating fire consumed a two-story home on Edison Street in Dubuque’s North End on the afternoon of Tuesday January 28th, 2025, leaving a family of nine without a home. The fire, which was fueled by strong winds, had already consumed much of the house when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Emergency crews responded to the fire at around 1:14 pm, with the first unit arriving shortly after, about 6 minutes. The home was a total loss. Firefighters worked for hours to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other nearby houses. No additional structures were lost, but some siding on adjacent homes melted due to the intense heat.

The family of nine, two adults and seven children, were not home at the time of the fire. However, the family’s dog and cat were tragically lost to the fire. The loss for the family is immense. Nothing survived, except the clothes they had on when leaving the house earlier that day.

In response to the fire, the Dubuque community has come together to support the displaced family. A GoFundMe campaign has already raised over $3,000 to assist with immediate needs, and donations of clothing and essentials continue to be brought. Those interested in helping can drop off items at the Hy-Vee on Locust Street or at 478 Tamarack Court. A GoFundMe page is currently active for those who wish to contribute financially.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Meanwhile, local organizations, including the Red Cross, have stepped up to provide aid. The Dubuque Fire Department was assisted by the Key West Community Fire Department, and continues to assess the aftermath. Hopefully, the overwhelming generosity and support of the Dubuque community will help provide the family with hope as they navigate this difficult and uncertain time.
