Traveling anywhere along the roadways in our Tri-State area leaves you vulnerable to any number of random animals crossing them. It can become even more difficult to navigate a high-speed incident with, say, a deer, when the driver is impaired, even slightly. That seems to be the case with Jo Daviess County's latest accident near Stockton, IL.

According to the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Angela Gunkel of Hanover was involved in a rollover accident on Sunday, August 24th, at around 7:50 PM. Deputies were dispatched after receiving a 911 call about a vehicle that had rolled over with injuries near E Schuller Road and S Massbach Road.

Investigators report that Gunkel was traveling westbound on E Schuller Road, roughly a quarter-mile east of S Massbach Road, when she crested a small hill and saw a deer in her lane. She swerved to avoid hitting the animal, but lost control of her vehicle in the shoulder. Her car continued off the side of the road, rolled over, and ultimately landed on its hood, upside down, in a small creek.

Gunkel was able to exit the vehicle on her own. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Stockton Ambulance to Midwest Medical Center for treatment.

Due to the accident, Gunkel was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This investigation is ongoing, and the charged individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
