How Does Dubuque Celebrate the 4th of July? Here’s a Sweet Tradition to Add
When it comes to celebrating Independence Day in Dubuque, everyone has their go-to traditions: backyard barbecues, fireworks by the river, and maybe a relaxing day at Eagle Point Park. But there’s one lesser-known, long-standing tradition that deserves a spot on your list—the Audrey Hammer 4th of July Ice Cream Social.
Now in its 61st year, this community event blends small-town charm with hands-on fun, all while supporting the historic Mathias Ham Historic Site. It takes place on Thursday, July 4th from 11 AM to 4 PM at 2241 Lincoln Ave. in Dubuque.

Named in honor of the late Audrey Hammer—a beloved local teacher and longtime Ham Site volunteer—the Ice Cream Social continues her legacy of education and community service in the most delicious way possible.
So, What’s the Scoop?
The Ice Cream Social is packed with festive fun for the whole family:
- Live music from The Americana Band
- Classic games like tin can alley, fishing, and bean bag toss
- Hands-on crafts like sunprinting
- Demonstrations of spinning, soap-making, and even live cannon fire
Plus, you can cool off with ice cream, cakes, and picnic-style food available for purchase. Free-will donations will be accepted, all benefiting the Mathias Ham Historic Site.
Although traditional tours of the Mathias Ham House are paused due to restoration, guests can learn about ongoing preservation efforts and what’s to come. The site, which also includes Iowa’s oldest log cabin and a historic schoolhouse, remains a cornerstone of Dubuque’s rich history.
Don’t Miss the Pie-Oneers!
Back by popular demand is the Pie-oneer Fundraiser, where community members can vote (with a donation) for one of three local figures to take a whipped cream pie to the face. This year’s brave Pie-oneers include Heather Green, Interpretation Program Manager, and Mayor Brad Cavanagh. Vote now at rivermuseum.org/events. Every dollar counts as one vote, and every vote supports historic preservation!
So this 4th of July, between the burgers and fireworks, add a little heritage (and a lot of whipped cream) to your day. The Audrey Hammer Ice Cream Social is a slice of Americana you won’t want to miss.
