Iowa Hawkeye Exodus Continues On Transfer Portal

Another Iowa player has entered the transfer portal. Iowa running back Gavin Williams announced his intentions to transfer through his Instagram earlier this week.

This season, Williams managed 43 carries for 198 yards, but struggled with injuries. Iowa now has three scholarship running backs on the roster; Leshon Williams, Kaleb Johnson, and Jaziun Patterson. The Hawkeyes will look to boost the running back position in the next few months with the opening of the transfer portal.

The Hawks seem to have already bolstered their attack through the transfer commitment of former Michigan Wolverines QB Cade McNamara.

McNamara led Michigan to the 2021 Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff. That season he passed for 2,576 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 64% of his passes. He lost the starting position to QB JJ McCarthy early in 2022 and served as Michigan's backup followed by a season ending knee injury.

The college football transfer portal is expected to be quite active. This is the first cycle with transfer portal windows, which stretch from December 5th to January 18th for the FBS with another period from April 15th to the 30th. Players cannot enter the portal whenever they please; although, graduate transfers and players whose head coaches have left their respective programs are not subjected to those guidelines.

In addition, schools are also no longer limited to signing only 25 initial counters per cycle. Basically, programs can actively rework rosters to sign up to their 85-scholarship limit. The NCAA also passed a rule that schools are required to keep transfer athletes on scholarship through the completion of their eligibility clock or until they complete their undergraduate degree. This means there is added risk when taking an undergraduate transfer, as they become "stuck" on the roster.
