It's often the things we do most consistently that get overlooked, undervalued, and underappreciated. In the last several years of sharing my adventures with you, I've often spoken about a beautiful area in Iowa where I forage for most of my berries, mushrooms, and have even got a deer or two out of the immediate area. That place is the Whitewater Canyon Wildlife Management Area in Bernard, Iowa.

Did I mention it offers up one of the best Iowa sunset views?

Nestled at the convergence of Dubuque, Jackson, and Jones counties, this 563 acres is a playground for nature enthusiasts, offering everything from hiking and kayaking to foraging, hunting, and breathtaking scenery. In fact, this location is one of only three true canyons in the entire State of Iowa!

But what truly sets Whitewater apart is its history. Picture the Waller and Henneberry families, whose love for the land ensured its preservation. In 2005, the Wallers entrusted their 419-acre parcel to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, ultimately passing it into the caring hands of the Dubuque County Conservation Board. And just when you think it couldn't get better, in 2007, the Henneberrys added a 144-acre gem known as Lost Canyon to the mix, expanding the area's allure.

As you traverse Whitewater, you'll encounter more than just scenic vistas. Hidden within its folds are rare plants, ancient geological formations, and echoes of Iowa's past. It's no wonder this area scored top marks two years running for preservation through Iowa's REAP program.

But beyond its natural wonders, Whitewater is a testament to community spirit. Hunters, anglers, hikers, and bird watchers have all lent their support to this ecological haven, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.
