Thank goodness I don't have any plans to travel as of now, otherwise I might be in for some REAL trouble. If you are like me, then you are officially out of time friends. You now need a REAL ID for the state of Iowa, and you'll have to get it done by May if you plan on flying anywhere this year (or doing other various activities). Last time I updated you, you had one year to get it done. Well, if you haven't heard the buzz recently, now you know our statewide due date is fast approaching.

That's right, starting May 7th, 2025, having a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification will be crucial for certain activities, especially if you're planning to jet off domestically or visit specific federal facilities. If you don't want to end up "grounded" or "locked-out" you're going to need to check out this breakdown of everything you'll need. Also, you're not going to want to delay any longer, as lines for this "new" ID could cause quite the headache if you already have trips planned. By the way, all states, the District of Columbia, and our 5 territories are now REAL ID compliant and issuing REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses and IDs that are the only way to gain access to these activities.

First off, why do US Citizens need a REAL ID?

Picture this: you're all set to jet off on a domestic vacation or perhaps you've got some business at a federal building. Without a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID card, you might as well be knocking on a locked door. If you're 18 or older and have any plans involving domestic flights or visits to certain federal facilities, like courthouses, prisons, and nuclear power plants, then you're going to need that REAL ID. In fact, you will be required to have one or no admittance will be given to you.

What does an Iowa REAL ID look like?

Wondering how to tell if your ID is the real deal? Look for a star icon encased in a shiny gold circle. If your current ID doesn't have this icon, it's time for an upgrade or you're essentially grounded until you get it.

What "Paperwork" do you need to get a REAL ID?

To get your hands on one of these shiny new REAL IDs, head over to your nearest Iowa DOT office. But wait, the Iowa DOT requires appointments as this process can not be done online. Make sure to check ahead for availability, as Iowa appointments must be booked online.

Now, before you head in for your scheduled appointment at the Iowa DOT, here's what you're going to need. There are a total of five forms of identification required to make this "gold star" switch.

  • First you'll need something with your full, current legal name. That means a certified birth certificate or U.S. passport.
  • Second, grab another document that contains your full Social Security Number.
  • Third, show off your Iowa State residency with two documents. This could be a bank statement or utility bills.
  • Fourth, you will need a document that has your signature on it.
  • Again, plan accordingly as the process can take an additional 30 days to receive your actual REAL ID in the mail.

Good news, there is no additional charge for a REAL ID; it's the same as your run-of-the-mill driver’s license or ID card issued by Iowa's DOT / DMV.
