A Wisconsin Town is Known as the ‘Freshwater Surf Capital of the World’
Malibu, California: a picturesque coastal city known for its stunning beaches, celebrity homes, and a certain laid-back lifestyle. Stretching along the Pacific Coast it offers iconic surf spots like Surfrider Beach, scenic parks such as Malibu Creek State Park, and cultural landmarks like the Getty Villa. Malibu's Mediterranean climate, upscale dining, and boutique shopping add to its allure, making it a coveted destination for both relaxation and outdoor adventures.
So, what if I told you these very things were available right here in the Midwest?
Now here me out, nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, is a hidden gem that's often referred to as the "Malibu of the Midwest." But is this charming city truly worthy of such a glamorous title? Let’s dive in and find out!
Surf's Up, Wisconsin!
You might be surprised to learn that Sheboygan has been a surf destination for over 50 years. Thanks to its prime location and unique geography, the city boasts some of the best waves on the Great Lakes, earning it the nickname "Freshwater Surf Capital of the World." While you can catch waves year-round, the real adventure seekers hit the water in winter. My wife and I just visited Lake Michigan earlier this year. The waves were pretty big that day, and the temperature was perfect.
Lake Michigan waves crash onto the sand. It was windy and the waves were roaring.
Imagine waking up at dawn, driving hours to find the perfect spot, and camping out for the best surf—it's all part of the Sheboygan surf experience. With pristine beaches and surf breaks that rival the ocean, you might just forget you’re in the Midwest. If you do surf in the winter the water temps are definitely more Wisconsin, then California, at around 40 degrees!
Bratwurst Capital of the World
I wouldn't necessarily call it "Fine Dining," but it's pretty much a standard every summer in the Drake household. Sheboygan isn’t just famous for its waves. In 1970, the city battled Bucyrus, Ohio, for the title of Bratwurst Capital of the World. After a heated competition, Sheboygan emerged victorious.
In this city, brats are taken seriously. Locals "fry" their brats on a grill (yes, they say "fry"!), then dress them on a round Sheboygan hard roll with onion and brown mustard. It’s a tradition that’s as unique as it is delicious. Sign me up, or as they say in 'Sconsin, "Get me a Double brat wit da works!" Oh, and make sure to take the brat oath too! The Annual Brat Days celebration is coming up, August 2nd & 3rd, and is a must attend event for any brat-lover.
Sheboygan's Rich Cultural Heritage

The city's cultural scene is as vibrant as its natural beauty. The city’s history as "Chair City" dates back to the late 1800s when its furniture industry thrived thanks to local sawmills and abundant timber. The dairy industry has also flourished, making Sheboygan County home to some of the biggest names in cheese.
It's Wisconsin so you are obligated to purchase fresh and/or fried cheese curds upon entering the State.
Architecture, History, and Community Treasures
Early churches dominate Sheboygan’s skyline, serving as the first ethnic centers and reflecting the city’s diverse heritage. Many of these historic churches still stand today, some dating back to before the Civil War. Lake Michigan itself has a treasured history of shipwrecks, and Sheboygan is located near the UP area which offers excellent hiking, fishing, hunting, and camping adventures.
Additionally, Sheboygan has always been a family-friendly place, boasting good schools and a safe, welcoming environment that has historically drawn families to settle down and raise children.
Unfortunately, crime has also seen an increase, ranking above the states average, but below the national median.
The Final Verdict on the "Malibu of the Midwest"
So, is Sheboygan really the "Malibu of the Midwest"? With its stunning natural beauty, top-notch surfing, rich cultural heritage, and delicious culinary traditions, it’s easy to see why this Wisconsin town holds such a prestigious nickname. Whether you’re surfing the freshwater waves, savoring a perfectly fry'd brat, or exploring its historical treasures, Sheboygan offers unforgettable experiences with great people to match. It's definitely worth a weekend.
