Police Identify Man Shot and Killed by Cedar Rapids Police

A man shot and killed by Cedar Rapids police over the weekend has been identified.

The Des Moines Register reports that the Iowa Department of Public Safety has identified the man killed by Cedar Rapids police as 40-year-old David Vanderhamm of Cedar Rapids. CRPD stated in a news release that the shooting happened after police received a 911 call at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. A man asked to have an officer sent to his residence. The Register reports that police then received a second call from another person asking to make a welfare check on the man, who was said to have a gun and making homicidal and suicidal statements.

According to the Register, when officers arrived at the scene, Vanderhamm raised his weapon and pointed at them. Three of the responding officers fired their weapons. Vanderhamm fell to the ground and was pronounced dead at the scene. A bystander was also shot and was taken to a local hospital. That person has also been identified by officials who are not releasing his name. The three officers involved are all on critical incident leave pending an investigation, according to the Register.

This is the second fatal shooting by Cedar Rapids police this year. In the early morning hours of January 1st, five Cedar Rapids police officers used deadly force after a high-speed chase involving 20-year-old Michael Griffin. According to LinnCounty.gov, Linn County attorney Nick Maybanks found that the use of deadly force in the case was justified. No criminal charges were filed against the officers involved.
