Las Margarrita's in Dubuque is my go-to when I want Mexican food. Beyond Christian Hernandez, the owner/operator, being a wonderful person, and the staff being friendly and accommodating at every turn, the food reminds me of the Mexican food I ate growing up outside Chicago. It's clearly made-from-scratch, with personal touches evident, and distinct flavors that make it feel like it was prepped for a large, familial cookout.

So, when Las Margarrita's — located at 1091 Main Street — took to Facebook to announce they just installed an ice-cream machine and were churning out soft-serve margaritas, I knew I had to plan a date night with Catherine. Soft-serve margaritas have been going viral on TikTok and other social media platforms for their unique twist on the frozen concoction (that helps me hang on).

What are Soft-Serve Margaritas?:

Appearing to have origins at a Cleveland, OH restaurant, soft-serve margaritas are exactly what they sound like. They are a creamy, richly flavored twist on the traditionally frozen cocktail. Las Margarrita's offers two flavors: mango, strawberry, or both mixed together. They are silky smooth and airy in their texture, and they are irresistible from the first spoonful.

Catherine opted for mango, and I opted for strawberry, while Christian also presented us with a glass of the two flavors mixed together. The mixed one was the winner for both me and Catherine, as it combined the tartness of the mango with the sweetness of the strawberry; the perfect, dichotomous blend of flavors.

As of this writing, Las Margarrita's is the only place you can grab soft-serve margaritas in Dubuque. Christian debuted the new line of margaritas at his restaurant on Mother's Day weekend, and it was an instant success. He sold over 100 in a day. Since then, he's noticed people coming from nearby cities, such as Galena, to try his delicious take on the blend of ice-cream and booze.

The soft-serve margaritas cost $10.99 each, which is very reasonable for a treat that doubles as both a treat and a libation.

Months ago, I caught the great Jon Taffer on the BroBible Podcast, where he talked about how people want to go to a place that feels relevant. That's the operative word. In particular, millennials and Generation-Z consumers want to eat and drink at places that are hip, serve quality food with quality ingredients, forward-thinking, and, let's be honest, picture-worthy, and thus, buzz-worthy. Inspired by his parents' recent trip to Houston, where they tried soft-serve margaritas themselves, Christian acted quickly and installed the ice cream machine. Now it's helping his business thrive, and it's rapidly making him a destination spot for people in Dubuque and beyond.

In this economy, small business success needs to be highlighted now more than ever. Tip of the cap to Christian and his phenomenal staff at Las Margarrita's. It's been a hectic year for a lot of us. You deserve a soft-serve margarita. Find out more about Las Margarrita's on their Facebook page, and see their full menu on their website.
