10 Commandments Of Holiday Air Travel For Iowans In 2023
It's that time of the year and though we're all traveling, here's how not to be that person.
The year isn't even over yet and I've spent a lot of time flying so far this year, with more airport time to go. We all know it can absolutely suck, especially around this time of the year.
But the airport is kind of a socially lawless place. Want a margarita at 7:00 a.m.? Babe, go right ahead. Paying $16 for a sandwich? Sure thing. But there's etiquette that goes along with air travel and there are several points that I've noticed are apparently overlooked. So let's review before we all jump in the boarding line for the holidays, starting as soon as you get to the airport.
10. Thou Shalt Be Ready At Security
If you've flown since 9/11, you should know to be ready for the TSA screening that must happen before you get to the gate. Pay attention to how quickly the line is moving. Get your phone, ID, and boarding pass (if yours isn't mobile) out and ready to show to the agent.
9. Thou Shalt Move Thineself Over At The End Of The Security Belt
You and your crew might need to put your shoes on, gather all of your things, and get your crap in line to go to your gate. But move aside to do it and don't stand in front of the receptacles or in the way of other travelers.
8. Thou Shalt Not Hover At The Gate Until Thine Boarding Zone Is Called
You're in the very back of coach. They're still pre-boarding. Sit down. You'll still get on the plane, don't worry.
7. Know The Actual Size Of Thine Carry-On
For the love of God, don't be that token idiot who brings a bag that's obviously too big to smush into the overhead compartments, taking up space for the rest of us. Airlines have that thing at the gate to measure your bag to see if it'll fit. If it doesn't or it's a full flight, just check it at the gate.
6. Thou Shalt Remain In Thine Bubble
We're all smushed, okay? Respect each other's space. Don't butterfly your legs out, recline your seat super far back, or steal your neighbor's armrest.
5. Thou Shalt Be Patient And Be Kind
Federal law allows flight attendants to work for up to 14 hours a day, according to USA Today. That's a long workday. What they, nor other passengers need, is attitude from you. Take a deep breath if you're feeling annoyed or impatient and choose to say something nice rather than snarky.
4. Thou Shalt Not Stand As Soon As The Plane Lands
Again, honey, we're in coach. You aren't getting off this plane right now. The jetbridge isn't even out yet. There are people ahead of you, they have bags too, just don't try to get up and get your bag out of the overhead.
3. Thou Shalt Know The Layout Of Thine Destination Airport
Especially if your airport is a big one, since many of them have tram systems between concourses. I've flown into Atlanta multiple times and I still hate it as much as I did the first time.
2. Thou Shalt Remember Airport Restaurants Have A Long Wait
Reference commandment #5.
1. Leave Room Between Thineself And The Baggage Claim Belt
Alright, yes, we're all waiting for our bags. I like to stand close enough to the belt to be able to take a couple of steps forward and grab it but far back enough to not be babysitting the belt. If you stand too close, it can block someone from getting their luggage.
Travel smart and safe this holiday season. May the odds be ever in your favor.
