Wisconsin Pet Food Company Recalls Treats Over Salmonella Concerns
A Wisconsin pet food manufacturer is recalling several freeze-dried pet treats after routine testing revealed possible Salmonella contamination. Foodynamics, based in Wales, Wisconsin, announced the voluntary recall affecting select lots from four brands: Raw Dog Barkery, BellePepper Cats, Kanu Pets, and What’s In the Bowl.
Voluntary Recall Follows FDA Testing
The company said the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected traces of Salmonella during a standard inspection. “Although no illnesses have been reported in pets or humans, we are acting quickly to protect animals and their owners,” the company stated.
Products Distributed in Three States
According to the FDA, the recalled treats were distributed through UPS to a limited number of customers and retailers in Wisconsin, New York, and Florida. Only eight packages were confirmed to have reached consumers. Pet owners who purchased these treats are urged to stop feeding them to their pets immediately and return the products for a refund.
Recalled Products Include:
- Raw Dog Barkery: 16-ounce “Whole Chicken Hearts,” Lot #030527 (Wisconsin)
- What’s In The Bowl: 3-ounce and 16-ounce “Whole Chicken Hearts,” Lot #030527 (Delafield, Wisconsin)
- BellePepper Cats: 3-ounce “Freeze-Dried Chicken Heart Slices,” Lot #031627, and sample treats Lot #121426 and #011526 (New York)
- Kanu Pets: 3-ounce “Freeze-Dried Chicken Heart Raw Treats,” Lot #031627 (Florida)
Foodynamics has paused production and distribution while working with the FDA to identify the source of contamination.
Health Risks for Pets and Humans
While Salmonella infections in pets are uncommon, they can cause vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Infected animals may also carry the bacteria without showing symptoms, potentially spreading it through saliva or waste.
Humans exposed to Salmonella can experience nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Officials advise anyone handling the recalled treats to wash their hands thoroughly and disinfect surfaces.
Foodynamics urges customers to securely dispose of any recalled treats, ensuring they are out of reach of children and other animals. Consumers can return affected products for a full refund.
