For years, I couldn't imagine going to a Cubs game without first (or after) going to Bar Louie.
Bar Louie: From Chicago Favorite to Financial Trouble
Their Wrigleyville location is long gone, and the tradition of Bar Louie closing restaurants continues across the United States.
The Latest Bankruptcy Filing
The reason why? It's what is being described as "macroeconomic pressures" like:
- Inflation
- Rising operating costs
- Customers cutting back on dining out
If this sounds familiar, that's because it's the excuse almost every restaurant facing financial trouble in America uses.
Another Round of Closures
Bar Louie, alongside their announcement of the bankruptcy filing, is closing 13 more restaurants.
These closures are occurring coast to coast, including in Detroit, Nashville, and New Jersey.
Bar Louie started in the Land of Lincoln and has since moved to Texas, but things haven't gone well in the past few years.
As I said, they had already filed for bankruptcy once. Bar Louie made that original announcement on March 27, 2024, and now, one year later, with over $50M in debt, they hope to restructure and survive.
What It Means for Illinois
For now, there are only five remaining Bar Louie restaurants in Illinois:
- 2835 Showplace Drive Suite in Naperville
- 17W350 22nd Street in Oakbrook Terrace
- 5615 North Cumberland Avenue in Chicago
- 1325 South Halsted Street in Chicago
- 5300 Touhy Avenue in Skokie
Whether you were team Happy Hour or team post-Cubs win, Bar Louie meant something in Illinois, and now it's a story of what's left.
