Names Released: Head-On Collision Kills 2, Injures 2 In Galena; Juvenile Driver Involved
Monday night (1/9) just after 11pm, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a three-vehicle crash with multiple injuries on US 20 West, about a tenth-mile west of William Drive, in Galena.
Upon arrival, Deputies learned that an eastbound 2011 Chevy Cobalt driven by 18-year-old Mallory E Nausner of Freeport, IL had been operating in the westbound lane attempting to pass a 2005 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer combination also traveling eastbound on U.S. Rt 20. The semi was being operated by 26-year-old Neil W Bruegger of Ridott, IL. As Nausner and Bruegger attempted to negotiate a curve in the roadway, Nausner’s Chevy collided head on with a westbound 2013 Hyundai Elantra.
The Hyundai was being operated by a 14-year-old male juvenile from Galena. The Hyundai also had two other occupants who were identified as 36-year-old Domingo Lopez Marcos and 23-year-old Ambrocio Santiago Maton, both of Galena. The Hyundai then collided with the trailer attached to the 2005 Peterbilt semi-tractor. The Hyundai came to rest in the roadway and the Chevy slid into the ditch to the north. Nausner was able to exit her Chevy before it caught fire.
Both Domingo Lopez Marcos and Ambrocio Santiago Maton were pronounced deceased at the scene. Nausner and the male juvenile were transported from the scene to Midwest Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Bruegger was not injured in the crash.
Any charges are currently pending as this crash remains under investigation by the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police traffic crash reconstruction unit.
