National Clothing Chain to Close 180 Locations, Affecting Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin
Another major retailer is planning to significantly scale back its presence, and the impact is sure to be felt across the Midwest, including in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Shoppers in these states may soon notice familiar storefronts disappearing in malls and shopping centers as part of a broader shift in the company's retail landscape.
The brand behind the move is Torrid, a fashion retailer known for its trendy, plus-size clothing catering to women sizes 10 to 30. The company announced it will close up to 180 underperforming stores by the end of 2025, as it pivots toward a more digital-focused business model. Online shopping now accounts for nearly 70% of Torrid’s sales, prompting a shift in resources away from brick-and-mortar operations.

So far, no official list of store closures has been released, leaving many shoppers uncertain about the future of their local stores. While larger metro areas may hang onto their locations a bit longer, smaller towns and slower foot-traffic malls could be more vulnerable.
The closures are part of Torrid’s strategy to cut fixed costs and reinvest in areas that drive long-term growth. This includes expanding its digital footprint, strengthening customer loyalty efforts, and launching new sub-brands aimed at younger shoppers. Brands like Lovesick and Studio Luxe are already showing promise and are expected to account for a significant portion of the company’s business in the coming years.

Some customers have voiced frustrations in recent months, pointing to rising prices and what they see as declining quality. Even so, Torrid continues to hold a unique position in the market by offering stylish, size-inclusive fashion. This continues to be a niche many competitors fail to fully serve.
The company is now encouraging customers to explore Torrid’s online offerings, especially as in-store options may become limited. If you're someone who likes to try clothes on in person, it might be worth making a trip to your local store soon, before it's potentially one of the many stores that close.
