Dubuque-Based Design Firm Earns Two Prestigious Concrete Awards
According to a recent press release, Dubuque-based architecture firm Origin Design is celebrating a big double-win after receiving two 2025 Excellence in Concrete Awards from the Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association and the American Concrete Institute – Iowa Chapter. The awards are said to recognize outstanding achievements in infrastructure projects across Iowa. In this case, Origin Design’s latest work on the Keystone Bridge in Elkader and the DeWitt Fire Station Addition caught the judges’ attention.
The Keystone Bridge Rehabilitation project, completed in spring 2024, was more than a simple repair job. The team worked closely with the City of Elkader, Iowa DOT, and the State Historical Preservation Office to preserve the bridge’s historic charm while upgrading its structure. Improvements included a new pedestrian walkway, a reinforced concrete bridge deck, and an enhanced drainage system to protect the underlying limestone. Atkinson-Noland & Associates partnered on detailed limestone repair strategies to maintain the bridge’s character while ensuring long-term durability. The project carefully blended preservation and modernization and earned the city a second recognition. Elkader received the 2024 Excellence in Archaeology and Historic Preservation Award from the State Historical Society of Iowa.
Meanwhile, the DeWitt Fire Station addition, completed in fall 2025, expanded the current facility to meet future needs. The new two-story addition includes conference rooms, offices, showers, a full kitchen, a versatile meeting and storm shelter space, exercise and locker rooms, sleeping quarters, and a dedicated area celebrating the department’s antique fire truck. The project stands out because it demonstrates how a thoughtful design can blend both functionality and community pride.

It's great to see local businesses shine for their outstanding work. For Origin Design, receiving these awards highlights their commitment to innovation, sustainability, and quality design. The release stated this recognition inspires them to continue creating spaces that enhance the way people live, work, and connect across communities in Iowa.
