If your weekly breakfast plans include pancakes (like my supper did last night), you might want to check your pantry first. Whereas mine were homemade, the FDA has upgraded a recall of Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix to a Class I recall. This means the product could cause serious health consequences or even death for people with milk allergies.

The recall originally came out in January, but as of Thursday, February 13th, the FDA has expanded it. The recall now affects 10,000 cartons sold in stores across Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin, along with several other states. The problem? The mix may contain undeclared milk, which could be dangerous or even life-threatening for those with severe allergies.

The FDA hasn’t confirmed whether any allergic reactions have been reported. However, given that about 6.1 million Americans have a milk allergy, this recall is not something to ignore. If you or someone in your household has a milk allergy, do not eat this product. Instead, throw it out immediately.

If you have happen to have a box of this pancake mix, check the label. If it matches the recalled product, don’t take any chances. You can also contact Quaker Consumer Relations at 1-800-407-2247, Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM with any questions. No other Pearl Milling Company products are affected, but this is a reminder to always double-check food labels. This is especially important if someone in your home has these allergies.
