Pete Townshend’s Classic Quadrophenia With Billy Idol Announces U.S. Tour Dates
Pete Townshend's Classic Quadrophenia is heading to the U.S. for a handful of tour dates later this summer.
The shows, which include orchestra versions of songs from the Who's classic 1973 album Quadrophenia, will feature Townshend, Billy Idol and tenor Alfie Boe. The production played London's Royal Albert Hall in 2015 with Townshend and Boe and yielded a DVD.
The U.S. tour consists of only four performances, starting on Sept. 2 in Lenox, Mass., with two shows at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, before wrapping up Sept. 16 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The Boston Pops Orchestra will be part of the first show; Robert Ziegler will conduct the New York and Los Angeles dates. You can see the list of performances below.
“I’m thrilled to be bringing Classic Quadrophenia stateside through the month of September,” Townshend said in a statement announcing the shows. “Melding the contrasting sounds of Quadrophenia with a symphony has been a really unique and powerful way to reach a wide audience of classical and pop music lovers alike. I couldn’t be more excited to see it continue in the U.S.”
The narrative scope of the Who's classic rock opera have made it an ideal showcase in various forms over the years. In addition to the original 1973 double album, Quadrophenia was made into a 1979 movie and a theatrical production. The classical adaptation of the work preceded news of a proposed sequel to the film that the band has since denounced.
Pre-sale tickets for Pete Townshend's Classic Quadrophenia go on sale at 10AM on June 8; general public tickets go on on sale at 10AM on June 13. You can find more information at Live Nation's website.
