Five Million Pools Recalled Across Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin: Nine Deaths Reported
I have often thought about how nice it might be to have my own pool. Of course, I didn't always think that way. My kids are much older now and fairly good swimmers, but a recent nationwide recall has brought back the fears of every parent: drowning, and how easy it can happen to young children.

On July 21, 2025, a major recall was announced affecting over 5.2 million above-ground swimming pools sold in the United States and Canada. The recall involves select Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup pool models (all 48 inches or taller) that feature compression straps on the outside. These straps can create a foothold for small children to climb into the pool unsupervised.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in partnership with Health Canada, reported nine drowning deaths in the U.S. between 2007 and 2022. All victims were children between 22 months and 3 years old. While no fatalities have occurred in Canada, there have been in states like Wisconsin, California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, and Missouri, prompting increased attention in the Tri-States, where backyard pools are a common feature during hot summers.
The recalled pools were sold at major retailers including Walmart, Target, Costco, Lowe’s, Amazon, and many others, dating as far back as 2002. Approximately 266,000 of the affected pools were sold in Canada and nearly 5 million across the U.S., including online purchases.
If you or someone you know owns one of these pools, don't ignore the recall. Parents and caregivers are urged to immediately contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit. In the meantime, the company recommends ensuring young children cannot access the pool unattended. Draining the pool until repairs can be made was also suggested.
Many Tri-State families know the joy and relief a pool can bring during to the summer heat. But safety should always come first. For contact information, details, and a list of affected models, visit the CPSC or Health Canada websites.
