With the recording of my latest segment of the "Fair Share" airing this Friday on Eagle 102.3 FM, I was able to officially meet the newest addition to the Dubuque County Fairgrounds family in John Bries.
New General Manager at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds.
According to a press release, the Dubuque County Fair Association is excited to announce his appointment as the new General Manager of the Fairgrounds. A lifelong resident of Dubuque, Bries steps into the role with an extensive background in business leadership, having served as president and CEO for several local companies throughout his career. His experience in the nonprofit sector includes his most recent position as Treasurer on the Executive Board of Bluff Strokes Art Center, a local nonprofit focused on art education and artist support.

Bries expressed enthusiasm for his new position, citing a long-standing desire to find an opportunity that aligned with his passion for community building. "I am a firm believer in creating community for families," Bries said. "I think with my business experience, I can help the Fair Association continue to move in the right direction." Check out our small interview segment with John here, before it airs this Friday in the 4pm hour.
Born and raised in Dubuque, Bries is well-acquainted with the local culture and values, making his appointment a natural fit for the Dubuque County Fair Association. The organization, founded in 1953, has long served as a hub for community engagement, providing entertainment, education, and family-friendly activities through its annual fair and a range of year-round events. Bries' leadership and business acumen will support the ongoing growth and development of the Fairgrounds.
Bries takes over from Kevin Kotz, who recently retired after nearly eight years as General Manager. Under Kotz's leadership, the Fair Association expanded its offerings and solidified its role as a key venue for community events in Dubuque County. Kevin has now taken a new role on the Fair Board as President.

Over its 71-year history, the Dubuque County Fair Association has grown significantly. What started as a small local event now spans 96 acres of land, offering a range of facilities, including a 3/8-mile dirt racetrack, rental spaces, an outdoor festival area, and event planning services. The Fairgrounds hosts not only the annual Dubuque County Fair but also concerts, festivals, and private events throughout the year.
John Bries' appointment signals a new chapter for the Dubuque County Fairgrounds, blending a rich history with modern management and strategic growth. His blend of business savvy and community spirit is seen as a great asset for the Fairgrounds as they continue to thrive as a hub for the community.
