Iowans Planning to Fly Have One Less Item They Can Pack
Flying can be a bit of a hassle. Not only do you need to have that Real ID, but there is a whole list of things you absolutely can NOT take on a plane. Most of us are fairly aware that certain liquids have volume limits, and items like knives, guns, or other items are strictly forbidden. Now, the TSA has added another item to the banned cargo list, and it could leave a few of the ladies feeling frazzled.
The new rule focuses on cordless beauty tools. Specifically curling irons, flat irons, and straighteners that use lithium batteries or butane cartridges. While these gadgets have become travel favorites for their portability, the Federal Aviation Administration flagged them as a fire risk when stored in checked baggage. The concern is simple: if one of these devices heats up in the cargo hold, there’s nobody there to stop the fire from spreading.

So, what’s the change? If you’re traveling with a cordless hot tool, it’s no longer allowed in your checked luggage. You can still bring it along, but it must go in your carry-on bag, and it needs a protective cover to prevent it from accidentally turning on. Spare gas cartridges, however, are completely off-limits. If you rely on plug-in versions, you’re still in the clear to pack those in your checked suitcase. This restriction only applies to cordless models.
The TSA explains the rule this way: if a cordless tool were to overheat or catch fire in the cargo hold, there wouldn’t be anyone nearby to deal with it. That risk is why these items are limited to carry-on bags, where crew and passengers are present, should a situation arise. That’s a fair point, even if it means adjusting your packing routine.
Quick List: Everyday Items You Can’t Bring in a Carry-On
- Liquids over 3.4 ounces (100 ml)
- Sharp objects (knives, box cutters, scissors over 4 inches)
- Sporting goods like bats, golf clubs, and hockey sticks
- Firearms and ammunition
- Flammable items (gas, lighter fluid, fireworks)
- Tools longer than 7 inches
- Butane cartridges or fuel canisters
So before you plant that fall getaway or holiday trip, take a few extra minutes to double-check your beauty bag. Better to reshuffle your packing at home than deal with a TSA officer pulling items out at security. Having that happen sucks for you and those in line.
