Update: Officer-Involved Critical Incident Following Dubuque Robbery & Grant County Car Chase
According to a press release from the Wisconsin Attorney General; The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer involved critical incident in Lafayette and Green Counties, Wisconsin that occurred on Saturday Afternoon (10/22).
Lafayette County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a cross-county vehicle pursuit that began in Grant County following an incident that occurred in Dubuque, Iowa.
That incident was an armed robbery in Dubuque at approximately 1:50 pm at AutoZone, 75 JFK Road. According to police a 22-year-old Dubuque resident arranged to meet at AutoZone an individual he had been communicating with online so the subject could test drive a vehicle for sale.
“The victim and the suspect test drove the victim’s 2015 BMW M4 and returned to the AutoZone area. The suspect then displayed a handgun, took the victim’s phone, and fled the area alone in the victim’s vehicle.”
City of Dubuque traffic cameras showed the vehicle leaving the city and crossing the Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge. This triggered a high-speed chase through three southwest Wisconsin counties. A press release states;
At approximately 2:34 p.m., the Deputy deployed a spike strip, and the vehicle drove in the direction of the deputy, who discharged their firearm while in Lafayette County. The vehicle later crashed in Green County, where the driver fled on foot. As law enforcement was searching for the subject, a gunshot was heard and the individual was found near State Highway 11, west of County M. First responders administered first aid, but the individual died at the scene. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
There were no injuries to law enforcement personnel. In addition, the deputy from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office was placed on administrative leave, based on department policy.

DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, DCI Crime Response Specialist, Wisconsin State Crime Lab and Belleville Police Department. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this Investigation. DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Lafayette County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
