U.S. 20 Closed in Jo Daviess County as Culvert Project Begins; $31.6 Million Reconstruction Underway
Drivers of Highway 20 in Western Illinois are dealing with a full closure of U.S. Highway 20, Monday April 13th, as the Illinois Department of Transportation begins a 12-day construction window tied to a major corridor improvement project.

The closure runs between the west limits of Stockton and Logemann Road in Jo Daviess County and is scheduled to last through Friday, April 24th. As always, construction progress will be determined by the weather.
The Illinois DOT says crews are using the shutdown to speed up work and reduce further long-term traffic disruptions. Workers will be removing existing culverts in the area and installing 10 new ones as part of a broader effort to modernize drainage and roadway infrastructure in the area.
Traffic is detouring around the work zone using Illinois 78, U.S. 52 and Illinois 64, along with Illinois 84. Officials expect increased traffic volumes on these alternate routes, along with longer travel times for drivers passing through the region.
All north-south crossroads through this corridor will remain open despite the U.S. 20 closure. Those roads include Logemann Road, Park Street/Rush Street, Canyon Park Road, Massbach Road/Funston Road and Mapes Road/Golf Road. Local access to homes and businesses in the area will also be maintained throughout the work.
The culvert work is just one piece of a larger, $31.6 million reconstruction project that will significantly change this stretch of U.S. 20 over the next several years. The plan includes building a new alignment north of the existing highway, adding a truck climbing lane, and constructing a new bridge over Rush Creek. Crews will also fully rebuild the existing roadway once traffic shifts to the new alignment, adding left-turn lanes and paved shoulders to improve safety and traffic flow.
The full project is expected to wrap up in November of 2027. The Illinois DOT is urging drivers to slow down in work zones, follow posted detours, avoid distractions, and stay alert for workers and construction equipment as the project progresses.
