Reddit became something of an unexpected life-raft for me when I was looking to move to Dubuque. The subreddit r/Dubuque was populated with a lot of friendly and helpful individuals who gave me suggestions of places and locales to check out once I settled.

Now that I'm completely settled, and have made Dubuque my home, I explore r/Dubuque with a lot more familiarity than I initially did. If you're not familiar with Reddit, it is an aggregation site for news and discussion. It's exploded in popularity over the last ten years becoming a simultaneously mainstream yet somewhat underground hub for online conversation and debate.

Reddit is comprised of "subreddits," or niche communities that focus on specific interests. Everything from TV shows to "shower thoughts" to jokes (both safe and not safe for work) have their own subreddits.

r/Dubuque is a very casual subreddit. The conversation cycles from people looking for gym recommendations to others sharing little quirks and foibles about the area only tried and true residents would understand. The people behind the sub even have a sense of humor. On the right sidebar of the subreddit, instead of "'X' number of users online," the moderators have spun it as "6 stuck on Grandview," a reference to one of Dubuque's long, windy roads that's prone to congestion.

As of late, the conversation on r/Dubuque has directed towards everything from good spots to watch World Cup games to debating what is the best Deli in the entire city? Some are seeking trades for hire. And one humorous soul is trying to remember old East Dubuque strip clubs. His post is titled "East Dubuque mammories" [sic].

I'll be interested to see where the conversation turns as Christmas nears. On other town-centric subreddits, you get a lot of photos of Christmas lights and other elements of cheer all around the city. I'm curious to see if the same will follow suit on r/Dubuque with the ongoing Reflections in the Park.
