If you’re used to bringing your car into a Monro Auto Service or Car-X shop in Iowa or Wisconsin, it might be time to check in with your local store. Monro Inc., one of the largest tire and auto service chains in the country, has announced plans to shut down 145 underperforming locations. While they haven’t released a full list, it’s possible that some Midwest shops could be affected by the closures.

The shutterings are part of a larger business overhaul after Monro reported a 4.9% drop in sales for the 2025 fiscal year, which ended in March. CEO Peter Fitzsimmons has stated the move is part of a four-step plan to get the business back on track. That includes improving customer experience, cutting underperforming stores, and making their inventory and merchandising more efficient.

Recent Expansions Now at Risk?

What makes this especially concerning for Iowa and Wisconsin is that Monro only recently expanded its footprint in the region. In early 2023, the company acquired several auto service centers in the Quad Cities area, including shops in Bettendorf, Davenport, Muscatine, and across the river in Moline, Illinois. Many were rebranded or dual-branded with Car-X Tire & Auto. They’ve also been operating at least 11 Monro Auto Service and Tire Centers across Wisconsin, including a long-standing location in Menomonee Falls that has already been closed permanently.

While those recent investments might suggest these other Tri-state stores are safe, nothing’s ever guaranteed when it comes to finances. The company says it expects a $45 million drop in sales from the closures alone. That means even some newer or rebranded shops could be under review.

Here’s What We Know So Far

As of now, no definitive locations have been given for the closures, but here are some Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin locations affiliated with or owned by Monro that could be affected:

  • West Bend (permanently closed)

If you’re a regular Monro or Car-X customer, now’s a good time to keep an eye on local announcements or ask your shop directly if they’ve heard anything. For now, closures are set to begin this spring, and more details could be released any day. As of now, it might not be a bad idea to get that service done you've been putting off. It could save you the hassle of finding a new auto shop should the worst happen.
