According to a press release from the city of Dubuque, Avelo Airlines has announced the temporary suspension of its service between Dubuque and Orlando, opting for a seasonal flight schedule that will see flights paused in early April 2024 and resumed in November of this same year. This decision is part of a broader companywide transition affecting eight airports across the country, with factors such as overall air service demand, aircraft and crew availability, and maintenance schedules driving the shift.

Dubuque Regional Airport Director Todd Dalsing has stated that ultra-low-cost carriers like Avelo routinely review and adjust their networks, making changes based on evolving demand and operational requirements. This move is in line with the carrier's quarterly assessment of its services. Avelo has modified its offerings at 26 airports in the past year alone, highlighting the fluid nature of the air travel industry, particularly among low-cost carriers.

Dubuque Regional Airport, one of the eight airports affected, is actively working to address the disruption. The Dubuque Community Air Service Task Force, in collaboration with the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce, is diligently seeking additional carriers to reinstate daily air service to the airport. A community air service forum is scheduled for February 22, where updates on these efforts will be shared.

Mayor Brad Cavanagh has emphasized that despite the challenges and changes in commercial air service over the past two years, the return of daily air service from Dubuque Regional Airport to a major hub remains the top priority. The community appreciates the service Avelo has provided and values the ongoing partnership while actively exploring solutions to ensure continuous and robust air service options for the region. The city acknowledges the disruptions but remains committed to achieving the goal of restoring daily commercial air service to Dubuque.
