I'm sure by now we have all become accustomed to the menace that is grocery shopping. Inflation. Tariffs. Economic battles. It's all led to some extra pain for your wallet at the checkout. Now it seems like we're in for an even bigger pain. If you love hamburgers or meatloaf, you've already noticed an increase in the price of beef; unfortunately, it may be getting worse for us in the Tri-States.

Across Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin, the price of ground beef is rising fast. Worse yet, it shows no sign of cooling off. Nationally, the average price hit $6.12 per pound in June, up nearly 12% from last year. But the local impact? It's impacting our cost of living in a big way.

In Iowa, prices have surged past $5.99 per pound, with producers getting just $2.08 of that—tight margins that leave little room to maneuver. Despite Iowa’s strong ag roots, cost-conscious shoppers are choosing price over local sourcing, and it’s making things tough for farmers and consumers alike.

Illinois shoppers are also feeling the squeeze. While exact figures vary, prices often hover at or above the national average. With cattle numbers at historic lows and tariffs on major beef exporters looming, costs are expected to keep climbing into 2026. So if you’ve noticed your weekly meatloaf costing more, you’re not imagining it.

Wisconsin is seeing some of the sharpest jumps. A typical two-pound pack of ground beef now runs about $11.85, up 7% year-over-year. And even with these increases, demand hasn’t let up. Summer grill season is in full swing, and folks are still firing up the backyard BBQs—only now, at a steeper price.

Behind it all is a long-building supply issue: droughts, high grain prices, disease, and herd cutbacks since 2020 have led to the smallest cattle numbers in over 70 years. And because cattle reproduction is slow, one calf per cow per year, experts say it could be at least 2–3 years before prices stabilize.

For now, smart shopping is your best defense: buy in bulk or from a local farmer if you can handle the processing yourself. Freeze what you can, and keep an eye out for sales if a direct buy is not an option. For now, I'd consider swapping in pork or chicken; your wallet might thank you.
