Bottoms Up: How Many Drinks Do Iowans Have In A Round of Golf
To whoever conducted this study, I want to salute you and say god bless. This is the type of information people need to know about. Who needs to know about world politics, why gas prices are going up, or what's happening with the schools in your area? What we really want to know is how hammered each state is getting when they're playing a round of golf. This is my kind of study and it's supposedly very real.
Golf has always been a relatively popular sport with millions of people who grab their clubs and take on 18 holes at their local golf course. The sport has seen a massive boom in people who are interested in learning the game since the pandemic. I would guess the boom is for multiple reasons with the main one being, you could get outside and do something fun while we had to social distance ourselves.
The other reason might be it's one of the few sports you can chug vodka lemonades and shotgun Busch Lights while you do it. Does this normally help someone's golf score? Probably not but there's an old golf saying "Stop thinking and start drinking."
Where does Iowa rank for most beers drank per 18 holes of golf? I'm actually a bit surprised by this research and its findings for the state of Iowa. I've spent a decent amount of time on Iowa golf courses and this number seems surprisingly low to me.
According to Pickwise, most Iowa golfers are drinking 2.7 drinks per 18 holes. I've lived in Iowa for about a year and a half and I've played a ton of golf since I moved here. I've seen golfers out on the course with 12 packs in a cooler, packed in the basket of their carts. That alone is 6 beers for the two individuals riding in the cart.
I've played in golf tournaments that have 4 carts with coolers full of beer in the back of their carts. Less than 3 beers in 18 holes of golf kind of feels like it's on the low end for the state of Iowa. More Busch Light is shipped into the Hawkeye state than any other in the U.S. Some of it has to be going to various golf courses.
The state where the most beers are drunk per 18 holes would be Florida, with an average of 4.8 beers, according to Pickwise. To be fair, Florida is basically golfing heaven. Florida has some of the best golf courses in the country and tons of regular people play golf in that state. Plus there are retirees who flock to Florida later in life and they can play every day of the week, so I didn't find this to be too surprising.
Who could forget about this all-time great moment from one of golf's biggest personalities, John Daly? He knows how to have some fun on the golf course. Would this be considered a party foul for knocking the beer over? At least he quickly corrected his mistake.
What do you think? If you're a golfer what is your drink of choice while you're on the course? Do you have a few adult beverages or are you keeping your game sharp by avoiding booze while you take on the mighty 18? I also want to ask anyone who golfs if this number feels low to you or if it's just me.
Hopefully, I'll run into you the next time you're out at the course!
