With the recent snowfalls in Dubuque(and more snow expected this week), everyone has been busy shoveling out their sidewalks and driveways.

But there is another very important place you need to shovel.  If you have a fire hydrant on your property chances are it looks a little like this hydrant just outside our studios..

But after a few minutes of work,(about 10 minutes for me) your hydrant could look like this.  And remember to clear the show from all 4 sides.

If you live next to or near an elderly or disabled person, and they have a fire hydrant on their property, do the neighborly thing and shovel it out for them. A fire can double in size every 60 seconds, so those precious minutes you save a firefighter could make a big difference. .  Who knows, the house you safe may be your own!

Hopefully you'll never need to use a fire hydrant. But if you do it's important to make it as easy as possible for fire crews to reach your hydrant.
