Dubuque Donut Shop Closes Permanently
According to reports and a post on the businesses Facebook Page, Donut Boy in Dubuque has officially closed it's doors permanently.
In a Facebook post the coffee and donut store owners stated, "We are sad to announce that Donut Boy is permanently closed due to staffing shortages. We want to thank all of our loyal customers for your valued business and support."
The announcement comes after the business has been closed for several days throughout the summer.
Donut Boy was located at 1646 Asbury Rd Ste 9 in Dubuque and was a local favorite. In fact it was voted best place for a Donut in Dubuque for 2023's Best fest. The last few months however have been plagued by issues of mechanical failure and staffing shortages.
Several reviews and complaints have been leveled at the establishment; some based around a change in doughnut recipe and an increase in pricing. Reviews have been fairly mixed across their Facebook page, with many people waxing nostalgic, while others complained about a lack of quality and service.
In 2019 the Donut Boy location did suffer a failed health inspection. The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals found many violations in Donut Boy; including, three cockroaches, employees not wearing hair nets, and food next to chemicals. The report also said the floors and walls were dirty. That was under the past ownership of Edward Gau.
Donut Boy was purchased by Paul Fahey on the final day of October in 2019. The business, located at 1646 Asbury Road, has been a fixture in Dubuque since the early 1950s.
