Dubuque Regional Airport Grabs $4.9 Million Federal Grant
The Dubuque Regional Airport has secured a nearly $4.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to advance the second phase of its Taxiway A reconstruction project. This crucial infrastructure upgrade, connecting the hangars operated by the Dubuque Jet Center to the airport’s runways, is part of a comprehensive six-phase initiative slated for completion by 2029.
The project will replace over 6,500 feet of aging taxiway, incorporating essential improvements such as storm sewer drainage, concrete paving, lighting, signage, and turfgrass stabilization.
For years, the Dubuque Regional Airport has been a vital transportation hub for the Tri-State area, but it has faced challenges due to the inconsistent presence of commercial flight providers. The withdrawal of service by major airlines has left the community and local businesses grappling with unreliable air travel options close to home. This has underscored the need for a more stable and dependable infrastructure to attract and retain commercial flight providers.
The ongoing taxiway reconstruction project is a strategic response to these challenges. By modernizing its facilities, the airport aims to enhance its appeal to commercial airlines, ensuring more consistent and reliable service for the Dubuque and Tri-State area. The project’s completion will not only improve the airport’s operational capabilities but also position it as a more attractive option for airlines, potentially restoring and expanding flight services to the region.
“We are grateful to receive this federal funding to help continue the taxiway reconstruction project. This grant will allow us to continue to improve our facilities, which serve private and student flyers as part of our larger effort to provide reliable and effective air service to Dubuque and the surrounding area.”
-Todd Dalsing, Dubuque Regional Airport Manager
The successful acquisition of federal funding was bolstered by the support of U.S. Congresswoman Ashley Hinson and U.S. Senators Joni Ernst and Charles Grassley. This grant reflects a strong commitment to improving local infrastructure, which is essential for economic growth. A well-maintained airport with modern infrastructure can attract more airlines, increase passenger traffic, and create jobs, all of which contribute to the local economy.
As the Dubuque Regional Airport moves forward with this ambitious project, it is poised to strengthen its role as a key transportation hub, ensuring the Tri-State area remains connected to broader markets.
