Dubuque’s Merry Mulch Program Recycles Your Christmas Tree
According to a press release from the City of Dubuque, they will again be offering the “Merry Mulch” natural Christmas tree collection program from January 2nd through January 12th.
Take the hassle out of dealing with trashing that real Christmas tree. Dubuque residents can set out them out on their normal collection day to be collected and composted. The tree must have either one city brush tie, or one city yard waste sticker attached and visible. Both brush ties and yard waste stickers are sold at most grocery, discount, and hardware stores throughout Dubuque, as well as at City Hall.
Any tree or shrub below eight feet high is eligible. The Merry Mulch Crews would like it if very large trees are cut in half or into segments that are not exceeding five feet in length/height.

The City is also asking that residents remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, wire, nails, stands or plastic bags which cannot be composted from the tree before set out. Wreaths and garland contain too much wire to compost. Remember, the city of Dubuque offers holiday light recycling, check out all the information on the cities program here. In addition, flocked trees are not compostable. Consider reusing or even repurposing these items before disposing of them with your regular garbage or at the dump.
For any additional information, feel free to call the City of Dubuque Public Works Department at 563-589-4250, or you can also find them online here.
Additionally, Dubuque is always in need of volunteers to help those in need this winter season. The city of Dubuque is looking able-bodied individuals to join the DBQ Shovel Crew, which is a snow shoveling assistance program that pairs volunteers with residents who are physically and financially unable to remove snow and ice from their sidewalks. This program is meant to be resource resources to those that do not have neighbors, friends, or can afford a hired service to complete the task. Visit the webpage to apply for assistance or to sign up as a volunteer.
For those looking to apply for help this year with snow removal. Basic guidelines and income levels can be found below.
