Getting going in the morning can already be a hassle when it comes to the roadways. Construction zones and road work make commuting frustrating at this time of the year, not to mention the increasing number of automobiles on the roadways and the number of them that seem to have never taken a driver's course in their life. Now add in the fact that you could be charged an additional amount than you normally do, just trying to get to work. This seems to be coming to a tollway near you in Illinois.

That’s because the Illinois Tollway Board of Directors just approved a new 20-year strategic plan,  and the most eye-catching element is the potential implementation of dynamic pricing. If you haven’t heard of that term before, here’s the short version: it’s a system where toll prices change depending on the time of day and how much traffic is on the road.

It’s similar to how Uber hikes its prices when it’s raining or during rush hour. Under dynamic pricing or congestion pricing, your toll could be higher during peak commuting hours. For example, that 7:30 AM grind into the city, and the "drive at 5" to get home. Now add in special events ( i.e. sporting events, parades) or emergencies on the road, and the prices could fluctuate greatly and without notice for drivers.

While this system is meant to ease congestion and encourage off-peak travel, for many daily commuters, it could feel like a surcharge just for sticking to their regular schedule. And let’s be real. Not everyone has the flexibility to shift their commute times or routes. In fact, most don't.

The idea isn’t without merit. Cities like London, Stockholm, and Singapore have used similar models to reduce traffic and improve air quality. The Illinois Tollway says the plan aligns with its long-term sustainability and service goals. Essentially, they are saying it's to improve traffic flow, not to make money, but it most definitely will. That being said, there will ultimately be a "max price" that you won't go over for toll expense.

Still, the change is likely to be met with skepticism. According to federal data, around 70% of people typically oppose congestion pricing before it’s introduced. That number tends to fall after the system is implemented, but the initial pushback is real.

For now, dynamic pricing is only something the Illinois Tollway plans to explore. It's not a done deal. But with rising traffic and infrastructure demands, it seems more like a question of when, not if. So the next time you're crawling along I-294 with your coffee in hand, just know that those stop-and-go minutes could soon come with a few extra cents tacked on. You just might have to switch from Starbucks to the gas-station special to keep your wallet balanced for your morning haul. Better yet, maybe you'll find another road to come in on.
