In a major shift that’s sure to affect healthcare in Illinois, Advocate Health Care has announced the closure of all 47 clinics inside Walgreens stores. Starting February 6, patients will no longer be able to rely on these in-store clinics for quick care. But what’s really going on, and how will it impact you?

The decision comes as part of Advocate's plan to focus more on virtual care and community-based services. According to the health system, many of these clinics were seeing “unsustainable volumes” in areas where other healthcare options are already available. So, what does that mean for you? Well, if you’ve been used to stopping by a Walgreens clinic for things like a cold, flu, or basic checkups, you’ll have to find a new option.

Advocate’s answer? More virtual care and in-person services at community centers and churches, where you can see a healthcare provider through video calls. While telehealth has definitely gained traction, it’s not the same as walking into a clinic for a face-to-face visit when you’re not feeling well.

This move is part of a bigger trend, with Walgreens also backing away from its original plans to turn its stores into full-fledged healthcare destinations. Walgreens had invested billions into its partnership with VillageMD, planning to open 1,000 Village Medical clinics in stores by 2027. But now, Walgreens is refocusing on its retail pharmacy business. In fact, the company has even considered selling its stake in VillageMD.

So, what happens next? Well, Illinois residents will need to get used to the idea that in-person clinics in Walgreens stores are becoming a thing of the past. While there’s still some hope for virtual care and urgent care options, it’s unclear how easy it will be to access these services in the future.

For those who relied on these convenient in-store clinics, this change may feel like a setback. Advocate says it’s working to find new roles for its employees, but the reality is that patients may now have to turn to other places for the healthcare they need.
